Here we are staring down the barrel of feeling hopeful for another new year. 2022 has been simultaneously one of the most rewarding and hardest years of my life. I’ve learned a lot and I can also honestly say that I’m glad to see the end of it. Whether 2022 brought you wonder, pain, or something in between I wish you forward momentum as we move into 2023.
If you’re looking for some tips on closing out this year and looking forward to the next, I’ve outlined my EOY ritual below.
What I’m Reading
Books
I recently finished Writings on the Wall: Searching for a New Equality Beyond Black and White by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. A lot of what he had to say didn’t feel particularly groundbreaking but he did lay out a comprehensive overview of many of the areas of our lives that are unequal and practical strategies for addressing them. If nothing else, this book was a great compilation of statistics about some of the most egregiously inequitable systems in our country.

My End-of-Year Ritual
I have a pretty hard-core end-of-year review and year-ahead planning ritual that I undergo each year. I take at least one full day to look back on everything I’ve done throughout the year and plan for the year ahead.
I look back on the goals I set and the mantras I laid out for myself last year and see what still resonates, what I need to carry forward, and what I need to leave behind. I think about the following questions:
What did I accomplish? Why?
What am I proud of?
What did I learn?
What did I say I was going to do but didn’t? Why?
What did I leave behind?
How am I different?
How is my life different?
I think deeply about the astrology of the year ahead with the following resources:
Then, taking the astrological outlook into account, I make goals for the year ahead. Here’s my goal-setting philosophy.
