Happy October everyone! Fall is my favorite time of year and October is my favorite month because it contains my favorite holiday.
Here are a few book and movie recommendations to get you into the spirit. I actually hate being scared, so you’ll notice that most of these are PG or G-rated options.

Books
Trigger Warning by Neil Gaiman: This collection of short stories will surprise you at every turn and leave you chilled to the bone.
The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman: This is one of my all-time favorite books by one of my top five favorite authors. It is the story of Nobody Ownes (bod), a human boy who grows up in a graveyard. Do yourself a favor and get the illustrated edition.
Goodnight Goon: A Petrifying Parody by Michael Rex: Exactly what the subtitle tells you, a petrifying parody on the old classic.
How to Make Friends with a Ghost by Rebecca Green: A lovely how-to guide for finding and caring for your ghost friends.
Mother Ghost: Nursery Rhymes for Little Monsters by Rachel Kolar: All of the classics with a frightful twist.
Movies
Arsenic and Old Lace: A classic from 1944 with an all-star cast. Cary Grant learns on his wedding day that his dear old aunties are serial killers.
The Ghost and Mr. Chicken: Another old-school classic from 1966 where Don Knots has to sleep in a haunted house to solve a murder.
Young Frankenstein: Mel Brooks + Gene Wilder…need I say more?
Monster Squad: An 80s throw-back where a group of young monster fanatics save their town from a group of monsters.
Here are some more recent ones that need no explanation:
Beetlejuice
The Addams Family (of course the original but the new ones are pretty good too)
The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown
Hocus Pocus
The Nightmare Before Christmas
Monster House
Hotel Transylvania
